Roasted Tomatillo Salsa
-
At the market this weekend, I brought home a basketful of tomatillos, a first for me. Tomatillos are a very mysterious vegetable, with a loose fitting corn like husk around a green tomato-looking orb that is covered with a tacky sap.

Ever scroll through your facebook feed and feel slightly worse than you felt before? I've developed this horrible habit of reading my feed first thing each morning. It makes me WANT.

Tamagoyaki - Japanese Omelette
-
At sushi restaurants, I love to end my meal with tamago. The sweet egg omelette on top of sushi rice leaves a nice finish in your mouth. Why not experience this pleasure at home? I turned to this post from Just Bento for a serious tutorial in the ways of making a Japanese omelette, tamagoyaki.

Eggplant Salad (for some, Baba Ganoush)
-
30,000 feet up, somewhere in the vicinity of Turkey, I was madly sopping up the last bits of my Turkish airlines' "eggplant salad" en route to Istanbul. Flight delirium, salt-tooth, who knows? I could not get enough of the eggplant magic.

There are some things that you should really only indulge in once in a while. Namely, things that are really good but are really bad for you. Sometimes you do not know just how bad these things are until you make them yourself at home.

Nora's Vinaigrette

If you were not unplugged on a summer getaway, it was hard to miss the news a few weeks back that Nora Ephron had passed away. I, sheepishly, was not all that familiar with Nora and her work, but as I read her list of things she wouldn't miss (dry skin, email) and what she would (waffles, the concept of waffles), I decided to top off my summer reading list with her books.

It's hot. It's 99 degrees hot today, 106 degrees hot tomorrow and 100 degrees hot on Sunday. (There go our hiking plans!) It's the kind of hot that makes you wish clothes were optional, that has you drenched in sweat immediately after stepping outside, and that entices you to escape to a movie theater, where you'll gladly pay $10.

Happy 4th of July! Summer time for me is a great excuse to turn back to American classics. Most feasts today will involve smokey meats, corn on the cob and watermelon, but I don't think this Americana worship needs to be a one day affair.

I'm fortunate. Last weekend, David and Melissa had us over for an awesome home cooked meal, and this weekend, Kim and Mike had us over for dinner. It is an amazing thing to have friends cook for you, to be invited into their homes, to laugh and to share stories.
